How do you feel about oral hygiene? I had always been part of the „brushing teeth is enough“ team until I had an extensive chat with a holistic dentist, Dr. Annette Jasper. It was really enriching to talk to her personally. Now I know so much more about substances like fluoride and aspartame, and I will teach you everything you need to know about dental care.

My morning routine


After getting up in the morning, there all sorts of different bacteria on the tongue. If you drink water right now, you’ll carry them into your stomach. Not all bacteria are bad, but in ‘Ayurveda‘ (ancient Indian teachings of life), it is said to clean your tongue before drinking anything.

For that reason, I get up and then go straight to the bathroom.

If I have a little more time or if I feel the need to clean more thoroughly, I rinse my mouth with coconut oil for 10-20 minutes. This process is called „oil pulling„. That’s how it works: You take 1 tablespoon of antibacterial oil of your choice – coconut and sesame are the most commonly used – into your mouth and rinse it while moving your jaw. In the meantime, you can clean out the dishwasher, do your laundry, answer messages on Instagram and so on.

Move your jaw gently so that the mouth gets optimally cleaned.

Then, spit the oil out – into the household waste because coconut oil becomes solid under 25 degrees and therefore could clog the pipes.


After the “oil pulling“, I brush my teeth with a natural (fluroide-free) toothpaste and a bamboo toothbrush.

My morning routine – the fast version

Most of the time, my routine looks a little different. Oil pulling takes a lot of time and sometimes you don’t want to take it. Good news: There is a fast way and that is scraping the tongue.

I brush my teeth and then I apply a drop of the Muskanadent tongue gel and scrape with a stainless steel cleaner, first from bottom to top, and then several times from top to bottom. That’s how I „scrape“ the bacteria from the tongue. This takes about 30 seconds, including rinsing the mouth, and it removes the bacteria very effectively. Muskandent is an all-natural brand of dental products that currently only delivers to Germany.

Muskanadent toothpaste is very mild compared to conventional toothpastes. Some people, however, like it when toothpaste gives them a lasting taste in the mouth because they like a fresher breath. For this, there are two alternatives to conventional toothpaste (with chemical substances):

  1. Use a drop of peppermint oil and drip it onto your toothbrush, in addition to Muskanadent toothpaste.
  2. After brushing your teeth, use the Muskanadent mouthwash. Dissolve only a few drops in a glass or rinse directly into the mouth for a few seconds. Now, fresh breath is guaranteed! ?

Muskanadent’s mouthwash is alkaline, other well-known brands such as Meridol damage the oral flora. Imagine it this way: A lot of bacteria in your mouth – good as well as bad. If good bacteria are killed by chemical ingredients, the bad ones replace them. Diseases such as tooth decay can be a consequence. That’s why all-around natural oral hygiene is so important.

In between/in the afternoon

Some people brush their teeth again after lunch. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s no longer necessary if you have a careful dental care routine in the morning and evening. After having a meal, you can use mouthwash to refresh your breath if you like. Even if you have eaten something sweet or fruity, the mouthwash provides subsequent mouth cleansing.

My evening routine

In the evening, my routine looks a little different. The whole day long, we eat different kinds of food and sometimes there are unnoticed residues between your teeth. They often hide in places where the toothbrush cannot reach them. Think of the consequences.


Step 1: Brush your teeth thoroughly.

Give each side of the mouth the same attention – inside, outside, from above, from below.


Step 2: Interdental brushes

These special small brushes reach the places that other toothbrushes can‘t. After brushing your teeth, it is best to put them in all the gaps and brush them back and forth.


Step 3: Dental floss

You can use dental floss as an alternative to interdental brushes. Especially when I am out and about, I choose dental floss. However, Dr. Annette Jasper does recommend the small brushes, as they can clean more thoroughly.

I hope this little digression into natural oral hygiene has given you a little more clarity. We do learn constantly and having this chat with Dr. Annette Jasper has helped me to a quantum leap in the area of oral hygiene.
